Who was the 2001 rookie of the year in all of baseball?
The NL winner was Pujols. The AL winner was Ichiro. But if you had to pick one of the two, who would be your MLB rookie of the year for 2001? The numbers:
Ichiro: .350 AVG, 8 HR, 69 RBI, 56 SB, 242 Hits, All Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, MVP award.
Pujols:.329 AVG, 37 HR, 130 RBI, 1.013 OPS, 47 Doubles, AllStar, Silver Slugger, 4th in MVP votes
First, let's look at overall effect of the player on the game. Pujols is a slugger - boom! watch out, he's going to hit one out, or hit one in the gap and clear the bases. That's always a big factor on the opposing pitcher (& manager). Ichiro is a great hitter, an artful hitter, and he's always a threat to run when he gets on base. Covers a lot of ground in the outfield, great on defense. Gets a ton of hits, and a bucket load of stolen bases. Both players seem pretty good, but in different ways.
Well, which is better? Look at the stats for 2001. At this point, Pujols stands out because he created a huge amount of runs. 130 RBI + 112 runs vs 69 + 127 for Ichiro. Slugging .610, OPS 1.014 vs. .457, .838 for Ichiro. Even Pujols' on base percentage was higher: .403 vs .381. Sure, he struck out more (93 vs 53) but he also walked more (69 vs. only 30 for Ichiro). The only significant categories where Ichiro was clearly better were stolen bases (53 vs 1), runs (127 vs 112), and hits (242 vs 194). And 194 hits is still pretty doggone good if you've got a guy who can hit it out 37 times a year.
I love to watch Ichiro play. The man is an artist, and he brings grace and finesse to a game in danger of being dominated by big, muscle-laden players. He's kind of like the little guys' hero. But I have to go with Pujols on this. He created more runs, and more wins for his team.
Final thought: you gotta have both kinds on your team. That's why it's a team sport, even though we tend to look at individual players' stats a lot.
